Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) exhibits a strong correlation with cardiovascular disease within the general population. Both conditions are more frequently encountered in cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) compared to other patient populations. We sought to evaluate the impact of NAFLD and liver fibrosis on intermediate-high cardiovascular risk in patients with IBD.
For a prospective cohort study, IBD patients underwent routine NAFLD screening, including transient elastography (TE) along with the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). NAFLD and substantial liver fibrosis were diagnosed with a CAP reading of 275 dB m.
