A bacterial species from the Leptospira genus is the source of the zoonotic disease, leptospirosis, which is gaining prominence. The results of our dRNA-seq analysis showed 2726 transcription start sites (TSSs), providing evidence for further identification of additional elements such as promoters and untranslated regions (UTRs). In our sRNA-seq analysis, we found a total of 603 sRNA candidates. These include 16 promoter-associated sRNAs, 184 5'UTR-derived sRNAs, 230 true intergenic sRNAs, 136 5'UTR-antisense sRNAs, and 130 open reading frame (ORF)-antisense sRNAs. These results, in their entirety, portray the multifaceted transcriptional expression in L. biflexa serovar Patoc across varying growth environments, thus providing insight into the regulatory networks of L. biflexa. To the best of our collective knowledge, this investigation marks the first report on the TSS profile of the L. biflexa species. To pinpoint the sources of organic matter and investigate its consequences on microbial community structure, different fractions of organic matter present in surface sediments from three transects across the eastern Arabian Sea (AS) were quantified. Organic matter sources and microbial breakdown processes in sediments were found to influence the distribution of total carbohydrate (TCHO), total neutral carbohydrate (TNCHO), proteins, lipids, uronic acids (URA), and their yield (% TCHO-C/TOC), as evidenced by extensive biochemical analyses. Sediment monosaccharide analyses provided data on carbohydrate origins and diagenetic paths. Results showed a strong inverse correlation (r = 0.928, n = 13, p < 0.0001) between deoxysugars (rhamnose and fucose) and hexoses (mannose, galactose, and glucose), and a significant positive correlation (r = 0.828, n = 13, p < 0.0001) between these same deoxysugars and pentoses (ribose, arabinose, and xylose). Analysis reveals that marine microorganisms are the source of carbohydrates, with no effect from terrestrial organic matter impacting the eastern AS margin. Heterotrophic organisms in this area display a preference for hexoses during the degradation of algal material. A range of 28% to 64% in arabinose and galactose (glucose-free weight percentage) content in the OM suggests it is a composite of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and non-woody tissues. In principal component analysis, rhamnose, fucose, and ribose display positive loadings, while glucose, galactose, and mannose show negative loadings. This separation suggests that hexose removal accompanies organic matter sinking, resulting in enhanced bacterial growth and the production of microbial sugars. The results show that sediment organic matter (OM) along the eastern edge of the Antarctic Shelf (AS) is sourced from marine microorganisms.
